History

Hillside Methodist Church was built in 1899 on the original site of the first Methodist chapel in Brinscall. This arose out of a need for larger premises to accommodate an expanding congregation.

The cost of the building was £3540.3s.7d. This sum was raised by members of the local community, along with large donations from prominent families within the area, notably the Parke family who owned the local cotton mill and who also provided the local swimming pool (still in use and much loved) and a hospital, now converted into housing.

Hillside has been the scene of many celebrations over the years - one of the more famous being the wedding of the celebrated contralto Kathleen Ferrier. More recently Hillside has been known for its musical success both within the area and further afield.

Most important however is that the congregations of Hillside have continued to support the community by providing 100 years of fellowship through worship, prayer and music.

Hillside is proud to be part of the connexion of The Methodist Church. It follows strongly in the traditions of John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist denomination. The history of Hillside over the last hundred years has been recorded in book entitled

"A Hundred Years At Hillside - Recollections Of A Century of Faith".

Researched and compiled by Judy Merry and Louise Hicks this is not just a dull chronology of events, but a fascinating insight into the memories, thoughts and feelings of those who have worshipped here since 1899.
